Making Applesauce

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING SO FAR THIS SCHOOL YEAR?!

In September we celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day by making our very own applesauce.  Each student brought an apple and took part in chopping apples and adding other ingredients to our crockpot recipe.  Our applesauce was delicious and was even enjoyed by some students who said, "I don't like applesauce!"  With a little encouragement, they were tasting and smiling and saying, "hey, I do like our applesauce!"

In October we learned about the seasons and the harvest.  We took a field trip to Schilter's Farm out of Montesano where we picked our own pumpkins, played in the hay maze and took a walk through the corn maze.  (Check out the photos from the trip on the Field Trip page). October was also the school wide fundraiser "Bingo Night."  Check out the photo below to see the awesome basket our classroom and room mothers put together for the event!!  The theme for our basket was animals and jungle.  I wonder why?!  ;-)  At one point, I was playing 12 bingo cards. . . as people left they gave me their cards to play and how could I say no? . . . they might have had a winning card ;-)!!  Anyway, I didn't win a basket, but did enjoy playing and socializing with McCleary students and their families.

In November, I was on an extended jury trial for almost three weeks.  We had a guest teacher in the classroom who did a great job!  We learned about attentiveness and thankfulness.   Some of us also participated in the annual "math night"  in the gym.  This event features dozens of math games.  Our booth used giant blow up dice to play a game of counting and recording.  We had a great time!

December was an exciting month of learning about generosity as we took part in the community "food bowl."  Our class raised over 78 pounds of food for local food banks.  We had a winter festival where the students made several gifts for family members.  These included wreath ornaments, snowman cups with snowman soup and mocha mix.  The children also wrote Christmas cards to injured soldiers in the military.

Our classroom's bingo night contribution -- this beautiful basket with a jungle/animal theme to go with our classroom theme.  The grandmother of one of our students donated the alphabet quilt and other items were donated by our room mothers and our students' families.  This basket was a BIG hit and was being drooled upon by most bingo players.  It was saved as one of the last baskets to be given away as a prize.  This kept many people playing bingo right up until the evening's end.  Thanks to all who contributed!

The Kindergarten classes sang several very cute holiday songs at the school-wide Winter Program.  These kids were decked out for the evening and sang their little hearts out. . .

OUR MLK JR TIMELINE
MLK_Timeline.JPG

January was a month for celebrating winter and snow.  We learned all about arctic animals and especially enjoyed the penguin study.  We also studied about Martin Luther King Jr. and his accomplishments and our class presented a human timeline in the McFun Assembly to share what we had learned.  Our timeline is posted in the hall.  We learned a quote from his "I have a dream. . ." speech that said,  "I have a dream that my four small children, will one day live, in a nation where they are judged, not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."  The students did a great job sharing the quote and even used some expression!  In January, we also had a school sponsored literacy night where students came and enjoyed activities connected to literature.  Our booth featured Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and included making our own coconut trees with letter climbing up them.  It was great fun!

February was a month of celebrating love (of course) and talking about how important it is to tell those in our lives how much we care about them.  We also be celebrated 100 days in Kindergarten.  We can hardly believe that we are over 1/2 way to first grade already.  Many of the students in our class are already beginning to read!!  HOW EXCITING!!!  We studied about famous black Americans for Black History Month and explored space a bit with our own space shuttle. We also went on a field trip to the US Post Office in McCleary for a tour and mailed some very special Valentines.   Check back for more photos. . .

March was another exciting month in kindergarten.  Our study of Spring was interesting considering the white stuff that decided to surprise us! The students also began writing in their journals on a regular basis and are really enjoying it and are becoming quite good authors.

We will continue these activities into the month of April and also
continue our study of plant life.  We will be planting some seeds and watching their progress.  We will also be focusing on the underwater world by learning about the plants and animals that live in the ocean. We will be learning simple addition and subtraction in Math.  In phonics/reading, we will be featuring the last four letter sounds.
